The Portland Mercury
As Art Director for Portland’s trouble-making alternative-newsweekly, I led a creative refresh that kept the paper’s snarky tone while evolving it for a new audience of readers. So keep the wit, and ‘clean’ the rest up. My role combined choosing cover art, creating brand extensions, art direction of photography & illustration, and weekly editorial design across print and digital.
Role: Concepting, designing, assembling crews for features or special editions
Achievement: Alt-weekly Award, Society of Publication Award
Logo redesign for popular weekly local art showcase on the fun/comic page

Collaborated with editors & writers to magnify their stories through smart visuals
Directed photography and illustration assignments
Papers With a Point of View
I transformed our paper into coffee table literature by:
Using cool takes like Shark kitty in Space (this is way before AI btw).
Then being inspired by classic American painters like Edward Hopper for a piece about video game exhibit GameOn 2.0 at the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI). Miyamoto’s Diner by PDX artist Bijijoo (of the presidential ham series). Oil on panel, 24in x 33in. Altweekly Award winner.
